本日ご紹介するのは

1969年製 Fender Mustang (Orange/MH)です。

 

コンペティションライン入りのムスタングとしては初年度、しかもオレンジカラーの入荷です。ムスタング自体はエントリーモデルとして1964年に生産が開始され、69年からコンペティションライン仕様に変わります。このデザインは当時のレーシングカーから影響を受けたとされ、今でこそややレトロな趣を感じますがカッコいいですよね。69年か70年にかけてはマッチングヘッドだったということで、今回ご紹介するのももちろんこの仕様です。

 

さて、このムスタング、何よりも弾いていて楽しかったです。なかなか止められないやつでした。

 

ムスタングの特徴といえばその独特なコントロール。

各ピックアップの3-wayスウィッチによるON/OFF及び位相の切替が可能になっていますが、フロントとリアが逆位相になっているときに音がかなり細くペラペラになってしまうものをよく見かけます。ぼくは少し歪ませたときに高音域のシャリンとした部分だけが残るようなあの感じも結構好きです。

ただ、今回のムスタングは比較的線が太くゴリッとした感じが強いです。もちろんこういったショートスケールのギターからものすごい低音が出てくるなんてことはさすがにないですが、両ピックアップともにそこそこの出力があるので豊富なローミッドとパンチが得られます。ムスタングらしい高音域は健在で、全体的なバランスが素晴らしいです。

両ピックアップをミックスさせた音はインフェイズ、アウトフェイズともにサチュレーションが豊かで、特にサステインの中に含まれる倍音量が多く、ここがビンテージも含め他のムスタングと一線を画す部分。コードストロークはもちろん、単音を弾いても同様に気持ちのいい音です。

ビンテージのムスタングはあっても、こういう音のムスタングはそう多くありません。

1969 Fender Mustang (Orange/MH)

 

Talk about 60’s vibe!

Here’s a Competition Line Mustang in great playing condition from its first year in production. Mustangs were initially introduced in 1964 as a student model and switched to Competition Line finishes in 1969. This design was very much influenced from car designs back then, notably the Shelby Mustang which had racing stripes. The first two years of Competition Line Mustangs had a matching color headstock, as does this one we have here today.

 

Now this guitar was a fun one.

Mustangs are known for its unique tone control with the 3-way switching for the 2 pickups. A lot of times when you choose the out-of-phase position, the sound becomes very thin. I actually like that tone too, especially when you kick in a little overdrive because of that sparkle that only Mustangs have.

However, this Mustang has a lot more grit and fatness. You’re not going to get a booming low-end with a short-scale guitar, but each pickup has good amount of output that gives you some low-midrange and punch. The treble sparkle is still there, and the overall balance is terrific.

The in- and out-of-phase tones have great saturation which makes this Mustang stand out from the rest. The harmonics in the sustain is nothing like regular Mustangs including vintage ones. Playing chords feels great, but single notes sound just as good.

Vintage Mustangs aren’t so hard to find, but a Mustang of this quality won’t be lying around.
