本日ご紹介するのは
Fender Custom Shop 2004 Masterbuilt ’68 Stratocaster Rosewood by John English (Natural)

最初のオールローズウッド・ストラトキャスターは1970年に作られ、ジミ・ヘンドリックスに手渡されたと言われています。

実際にそのギターが完成したのはジミが亡くなる寸前のこと。
けれど実機は現在どこにあるのかも、そもそも実際に手渡されたのかもよく分かっていないそう。

というのがオールローズウッド・ストラトキャスターのお話。

今日ご紹介するのは今は亡きマスタービルダー、ジョン・イングリッシュ氏によって製作され、’68のスペックを踏襲したラージヘッドとFキーペグが採用されております。

メイプルが挟まれたローズウッドボディーはチェンバード構造になっており、それでもやや重めではありますが、空気感のある生鳴りがふくよかな中域を生み出してます。

ピックアップの出力があまり強くないので、プレーン弦のハイ成分がリアピックアップでも痛くなく、むしろリアで弾いているのがぼくは一番楽しかったです。
ビンテージ・スタイルの細めのフレットと相まって素早く温かいアタックがなんとも心地いい（個人的にジャンボタイプよりビンテージタイプのフレットが元々好きなのもありますが）。

ネックはいわゆる60年代初期のものに比べ厚みがあり、こちらもぼく好みのシェイプでした。

人目を惹く独特のギターであることは間違いない。
ロックギターではないのかもしれないけど、見た目も音も美しい、そんな一本です。

My pick for today is…
Fender Custom Shop 2004 Masterbuilt ’68 Stratocaster Rosewood by John English (Natural)

Legend has it that a prototype of an all-rosewood Strat was built and given to Jimi Hendrix back in 1970.

The original was completed just before Hendrix’s death, and no one really knows where the guitar is now, or if it was ever even handed to him.

So that’s the story of the original All-Rosewood Strat.

This particular one was built by the late Masterbuilder John English, and is based on the ’68 Strat spec with a large headstock and F-key Tuners.
It has a chambered body for a bit of weight relief, with a piece of maple pancaked in between, and though not very light, I like how the body resonates and gives the tone a slight but nice open and full mid-range.

The pickups are not very hot, so the treble strings aren’t ice-picky even on the rear pickup, and the rear pickup is actually where I enjoyed playing the best.

It’s got a great quack, and the vintage-style fret wires add to this with a good strong attack (I’ve always preferred vintage-style to medium-jumbos or jumbos).

The neck has a bit more chunk than early 60’s necks, which feels great, at least for me.

All in all, this one is definitely a one-of-a-kind guitar, and though it may not be a rock machine, it’s got a beautiful look and tone.
