本日ご紹介するのは

1998年製 Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Les Paul Murphy Aged Guitar Preservation (Iced Tea Burst)です。

 

これはなかなかお目にかかることのない逸品。まだギブソンカスタムショップではファクトリーエイジドモデルがラインナップされていない頃の個体。代わりにエイジング加工を手がけていたのは当時”ギター・プレザーヴェーション”のブランド名で工房を構えていたトム・マーフィー氏です。

当店の壁に近年ものの他のレスポールとともに展示していますが、やはりこの一本だけ一線を画す趣があります。トップの独特な杢は目を惹くし、製造から20年経ったその歳月が元々のエイジングと相まってなかなか筆舌に尽くしがたいオーラを放っています。自然にフェイドしてきているアイスティーカラーも絶妙。カッコいいです。

これだけのルックスだとただ眺めてるだけでも、また手に取るだけでも気分がいいですが、弾き心地もまた美味でした。3.95kgとこの時代の’58モデルとしては比較的軽量。この空気感がありつつ程よく身の詰まった木部の良さを搭載されている’57クラシックピックアップが余すところなく出力してくれます。近年のカスタムショップ製レスポールに載っているカスタムバッカーと対比すると、全体的なキャラクターの方向性は近いものがありますが、’57クラシックの方が若干パワーがあるので、木部の持つ押し出しとの組み合わせが気持ち良く、特にオーバードライヴトーンは絶品です。

“Best wishes＂という英語の常套句にかけて “Burst wishes”と書かれたトム・マーフィー氏の直筆メッセージに茶目っ気とレスポールに対する愛を感じさせるところにもグッときちゃいます。なんていったって歴史的価値のある一本ですからね！

My pick for today is…

1998 Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Les Paul Murphy Aged Guitar Preservation (Iced Tea Burst).

 

This one is a guitar we don’t get to come across very often. The guitar itself is from the early years of Gibson Custom Shop when they didn’t offer “factory-aged” models. Instead, they would call on Mr. Tom Murphy, who at the time was working under his own brand “Guitar Preservation” based in Marion, Illinois after parting ways with Gibson in 1994, and the rest is history.

Hanging on the wall of our shop along with other aged Les Pauls from more recent years, this guitar definitely stands out in more ways than one. The maple top has a very unique figure which makes this guitar all the more lovable, and 20 years of life has certainly added more vibe to the already aged look. The natural fade of the Iced Tea Burst finish simply looks great. Dang.

This one was fun to play too. It always feels nice to play a guitar that looks nice, but what is cool is the fact that even though this Les Paul is a ’58, it weighs right around 8.7 lbs which is rather light. The ’57 Classic pickups belts it all out without taking away or adding anything to the tone. ’57 Classics are somewhat close to Custombuckers, just a little bit hotter. With a Les Paul in this weight range, it’s nice to have that push that ’57 Classics offer, especially when you want that classic overdriven sound guitar lovers tend to love.

There’s a signature and a message from Mr. Tom Murphy on the back cavity plate that says “Burst Wishes” and it put a smile on my face. You’re looking at a piece of history!
