本日ご紹介するのは

2001年製 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt ’52 Custom Telecaster Tele-Gib by Art Esparza (White Blonde)です。

 

演奏性、出音、見た目と3拍子揃ったこちらのギター、ジェフ・ベックファンなら見覚えはあるでしょうけど、今日はそこにはあえてあまり触れないでおきます。そこに収めてしまうにはもったいない楽器です。

このテレは当時フェンダーのマスタービルダーとして活躍していたアート・エスパーザ氏製作の一本で、素晴らしい仕事をしてくれたなと思ってしまいます。まず手にとった瞬間分かるのはその軽さ。2.93kgですよ。もちろん中をくり抜いたりなどしていないし、シングルコイルよりも重いハムバッカーを2基載せてこの重量はすごいです。

生鳴り自体にすでに軽い個体にしかない空気感を感じます。レスポールについての投稿の中では幾度となく書いていますが、軽くなればそれだけ中域に膨らみが出て高音域と低音域が弱くなり、アタックのパンチも弱くなります。この木部の特性がハムバッカーと見事にマッチしています。

テレにハムバッカーを載せるとやや輪郭がぼやけ、フロントにいたってはこもり気味になってしまうこともしばしばですが、この個体はちゃんと輪郭を保っていて、通常とは全く異なるピックアップ構成にも関わらず出音にテレキャスターらしさを感じます。低音弦の倍音はうまくまとまっていて、P-90っぽさすら感じます。高音弦は通常のテレのようなハキハキした感じこそ薄いですが、その分高音域が出すぎることはなく、センターの中域がスクープされた音なんかはすごくいいです。歪み系のエフェクターを置いてあげるとハムらしいクリーミーさとバイトを引き出してくれます。

ネックシェイプは丸みこそありますが、通常の’52テレに比べさほど厚みはありません。2001年製ですが、すごく綺麗なコンディションが保たれているというのも述べておきます。

My pick for today is…

2001 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt ’52 Custom Telecaster Tele-Gib by Art Esparza (White Blonde).

 

This one is a great playing, great sounding and great looking guitar. It’s a killer.

I’m sure Jeff Beck fans would be familiar with this one, but I’m not going go much into that because this one isn’t just for Jeff Beck fanatics.

This Tele was built by then Fender Masterbuilder Art Ezparza, and he sure did a fantastic job. The moment you take it in your hands, you’ll immediately notice how light it is. Weighing just under 6.5 lbs, it’s light as feather. Remember, it’s got two humbuckers on there, and these weigh more than regular Tele single-coils. It’s ridiculous.

Play it unplugged, there is that airiness that only lightweight bodies have. As I have been saying often in my posts on Les Pauls, lighter bodies have more midrange and less treble and bass frequencies, and less punch in the attack as well. This character seems to go along well with the two humbuckers in this guitar.

Humbuckers in Telecasters often become a little muddy especially in the neck position, but this one maintains clarity nicely. Even with humbuckers, it still has that Tele character. The bass strings have a good focused harmonic character that is almost like a P-90 kind of sound. Though the treble strings aren’t very snappy like normal Tele single-coils, the high frequencies are not at all harsh, and the scooped tone of the middle position sounds great. A dirt pedal will bring out a little more of the creamy humbucker-ness with a good biting attack.

The neck has a round profile that is a tad thinner than other Custom Shop ’52 Telecaster that I have played. Those U-shaped necks are pretty big, but not this one. I’ll also have to mention this guitar is very clean for its age, and a great guitar to own.
