2003年製 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Custom ‘60s Stratocaster by John English (Black&White)です。

名匠ジョン・イングリッシュ氏製作のCustom Stratocaster、一目見たら忘れられないルックスですね。私もケースを開けた瞬間の想像を超えてきた感は未だに忘れられません。

 

目を引くのはアッシュの木目が白く浮かび上がるBlack&Whiteフィニッシュです。Gibsonで言うSilver Foxフィニッシュに近いルックスですが、よりくっきりと筋が見える印象です。

 

そしてポイントは何と言っても…

大理石のようなパールガード!

これほど重厚感のあるルックスのストラトキャスターはそうないと思います。

 

音はさすがジョン・イングリッシュとしかいいようのないバランスの良いサウンドです。フロントとセンターはレンジが広めですがストラトらしさを失っていないサウンドで、クリアーな音からいなたいブルースロックサウンドまでちょうど良いバランスを保ったままコントロールができます。リアとのバランスも整っており、SSHのストラトで悩まされがちな音量バランスの悪さもあまり気になりません。特に歪ませた時の押しの強さと音飛びは弾いていて非常に気持ちいいです!

 

この個体は“ゴージャス”、”エレガント”という言葉が非常に似合うルックスとサウンドを兼ね備えたストラトキャスターの1つの答えかもしれません。

My pick for today is…

2003 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Custom ‘60s Stratocaster by John English (Black&White)

 

Built by the late Senior Masterbuilder John English, this Custom Stratocaster has a look like no other. I still remember that moment I opened the case. It was totally beyond what I expected to see.

The Black & White finish with is definitely unique. Some Gibson guitars like the Brian Ray SG have a similar finish they call Silver Fox, but the contrast is stronger on this guitar.

What really caught my eyes was the marble-like pearl pickguard. How many Strats have you seen that have THIS kind of look? Pretty impressive.

 

The tone is all you can ask for from master John English. Very nicely balanced, and though the neck and middle pickups have a relatively wide frequency range, it still has the Stratocaster-goodness and can go from sparkly clean tone to gritty blues rock while maintaining that balance. The volume between single-coils and bridge humbucker is balanced as well unlike many Strats in SSH configuration. When you give it a little dirt, it’s amazing how the notes pop out with a good amount of push.

 

The best words to describe this guitar’s look and sound would be “gorgeous” and “elegant”, and maybe what many players are looking for in a Strat. You better hurry!
