本日ご紹介するのは

2008年製 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt ’60 Stratocaster Closet Classic by Todd Krause (Red Sparkle)です。

 

まだ入荷したばかりですが、これはかなりワクワクしちゃう一本です。

バリバリにウェザーチェックが入ったレッドスパークルフィニッシュにはグッときちゃいます。ただキラキラな赤ならぼくはあまりときめかなかったかもしれませんが、これはクローゼットクラシック。ここがポイントです。目を惹くルックスであることは間違いないですが、弾いてみると耳を惹く出音でもありました。

 

通常のカスタムショップの’60スタイルストラトにしてはネックが若干分厚いシェイプで、なんとなく細くてか弱い感じがするものもある中でぼくはこのシェイプはかなり好みです。それだけでなく、ネックの響き方も適度な硬さがあり振動が暴れることなくまとまってくれます。これが出音を大きく左右します。

このギターはマスタービルダーの底力を感じれるいい例だと思います。もちろんいい音がするカスタムショップのストラトだってあります。けれど、ある程度の押し出しと倍音のギュッとしたまとまりをお求めであればやっぱり答えはマスタービルダーにあります。倍音量は他とは比べものにならないし、特に歪ませたときの高音域にシュワシュワ〜と残る倍音にはうっとりしてしまいます。この個体は時にハーフトーンのローミッドの出方と高音域のバランスが素晴らしく、全く薄っぺらさがありません。ピックアップを出力の強いものにしたり高さを弦に近づける必要もないし、だからこそ空気感もちゃんとあります。全ては木部の中に既に宿っている…!

 

この一本はそう長いこといないでしょう。

2008 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt ’60 Stratocaster Closet Classic by Todd Krause (Red Sparkle)

 

Here’s a newcomer that just swung through our doors. I’m pretty thrilled about this one.

I’m loving this Red Sparkle finish with checking all over. If it was just a sparkly red, I would have probably just went “meh, not my kind of guitar.” The thing is, it’s a Closet Classic, and this makes things whole lot better. Definitely an eye-catcher, and it turns out it’s an ear-catcher as well.

 

The neck is slightly thicker than what most of us might expect from a Custom Shop ’60-style Strat. Since many tend to feel a bit feeble in the hands, I definitely prefer this profile. Not only that, the neck itself feels more solid and really tightens the resonance. This makes a huge difference in tone.

This guitar is a great example of what a Masterbuilt Strat can accomplish. There are great sounding Custom Shop Strats for sure, but if you’re looking for a punchy tone with focused frequency character, you will have to go for a well-made Masterbuilt like this one. The amount of harmonics comes no where close, and the shimmering overtone is simply beautiful, especially when you kick in a little dirt. There’s fatness in the bass strings and warm undertone in the treble strings. With this particular guitar, the out-of-phase positions have a great balance of low-midrange and sparkle without going thin. Ugh, I can’t get enough of this guitar. You don’t need hot pickups, nor do you have to jack up the pickups. It’s all already in the wood.

 

This guitar is not going to be with us for a long time.
