本日ご紹介するのは

2008年製 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt ’60 Stratocaster Heavy Relic by Jason Smith (Black / Candy Apple Red)です。

フェンダー・マスタビルダー、ジェイソン・スミス氏がまたしてもやってくれました。マルチレイヤーフィニッシュのギターは見ていても面白く、またジェイソン氏のエイジングもまた素晴らしい出来映えです。エルボー部分だけでなく、ちょっとした打痕の部分から下のキャンディアップルレッドが覗く感じなんかもカッコいいですよね。塗装が通常よりも分厚いし、音はそんなに良くないんじゃないの？と思う方も中にはいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、そんなことは全然ないですよ。見た目同様、グッドトーンです。

弾き始めて漠然と浮かんだ言葉は”ブルージー”。ローミッド帯域の倍音がとても豊かで、ストラトの中では高音域がキラキラするようなタイプではなく、どちらかというと唸るタイプです。ネックも通常の’60スタイルのものに比べ厚みがあり、その分出音の低音域にコシを与えます。ピックアップの出力は控えめなので倍音が膨らむ空気感があってこれがまたいい音なんです。ぼくはリア、それからリアとセンターのハーフトーンのポジションが一番好みでした。高音域が決して近々せず、前述した楽器自体のキャラクターとポジション自体が持つキャラクターがうまくマッチしている印象を受けます。このギターの土臭さがぼくはすごく好きです。

このギターもあまり長くはいなさそうですよ…

My pick for today is…

2008 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt ’60 Stratocaster Heavy Relic by Jason Smith (Black / Candy Apple Red).

Masterbuilder Jason Smith once again did a mighty fine job. Multi-layer finished guitars are always fun to look at, and Jason Smith’s aging work makes it even better. Don’t just think it won’t sound good just because it has an extra layer of paint. It sounds as good as it looks.

This guitar has a very bluesy tone with rich harmonics in the low-midrange frequencies. Not exactly the shiny sparkly kind of guitar, but rather a growling, barking one. Neck has a bit more meat than typical ’60-style Strats, which adds a little more low end. The pickups are not very hot, so there is tonal space for the harmonics to bloom out into the room. The bridge position and the bridge-center mix position were my favorites. The quack that this guitar has makes it so fun to play, and it’s not going to hurt your ears at all. I just love the earthiness that this guitar has.
