本日ご紹介するのは

2009年製 Gibson Custom Shop Michael Bloomfield 1959 Les Paul VOS (Bloomfield Burst)です。

 

現在当店では希少なアーティストモデルのレスポールが数本あるのですが、そのうちの一本がこちら。

マイク・ブルームフィールドはブルースファン、レスポールファン、そしてギターファンなら一度は耳にしたことのある名前なのではないでしょうか。

 

マディ・ウォーターズに憧れシカゴのブルースシーンで頭角を現し、ポール・バターフィールドのバターフィールド・ブルース・バンドやボブ・ディランのバンドにも参加したまさに名手。

バターフィールド・ブルース・バンドを経て自身のバンド、”エレクトリック・フラッグ”を結成した頃に入手したのがかの有名な1959年製レスポール・スタンダード。

キャリアを通してテレキャスターなど他のギターも使ってはいましたが、やはり一般的にはブルームフィールドといえばレスポールというイメージが強いと思います。

 

しかしながら、7年ほど使い続けた後にこのレスポールは突然姿を見せなくなり、ブルームフィールドはあのときそれをどこにやったのか、諸説あるみたいですがはっきりとしたことはよく分かっていないそうです。

そして1981年に37歳の若さで亡くなり、彼はあのレスポールと共に伝説となりました。

 

2009年にギブソン・カスタム・ショップがこのブルームフィールド・バーストを再現し、本日ご紹介するのがそのVOS版です。

200本限定で生産されたVOS版ですが、ボディのお尻部分のバーストが褪色した色合いや種類がチグハグなコントロールノブ、黒く塗られたテイルピース・スタッド、初期SGに付いていた”Les Paul”という文字が入ったトラスロッドカバー、グローバー・ペグの搭載などその実機の特徴をしっかりと押さえています。

 

ブルームフィールドはギターをあまり大事に扱わなかったようで、時にはケースにすら入れず裸のままバスに乗ってライブ会場に持って行っていたとか。

交換されたパーツはそのうち壊れたり無くしたりして、取りあえず余ってたものを取り付けただけだったのでしょう。

それもこのギターの持つストーリーの一部。

 

当店にて在庫しているものは弾いても楽しい一本です。

4.17kgとしっかりとした重量があり、またフロントにバーストバッカー1、リアにバーストバッカー2を搭載することにより強いバイト感のあるアタックとクリーミーな中域が出てくれます。

ピッキングのニュアンスにしっかり反応してくれ、またダイナミックレンジも広いので強く弾けば弾いただけ音が飛び出てきます。

 

ただ珍しいだけでなく、ちゃんと弾いて楽しめる楽器でもあります。

これは逃す手はないと思いますよ…

2009 Gibson Custom Shop Michael Bloomfield 1959 Les Paul VOS (Bloomfield Burst).

 

We have a few quite rare artist model Les Pauls in stock right now, and here’s one of them.

 

Mike Bloomfield is a name to remember if you’re a blues fan or a Les Paul fan or a guitar fan in general.

He played with Paul Butterfield as a member of the Butterfield Blues Band and the guitar work on Bob Dylan’s hit “Highway 61” is this guy too.

It was around the time when he formed his own group the Electric Flag that he acquired the prized ‘Burst, and though Bloomfield is known to have played various guitars through the course of his career, the Les Paul is the one that many associate him with.

 

After several years of use, the Les Paul suddenly disappears, and heaven knows what he did with it.

He left us a little too early at the age of 37 in 1981, which makes this man, and his ’59 Les Paul, a myth and a legend.

 

In 2009, Gibson Custom Shop did a limited run of the Bloomfield Bursts, and here we have one in VOS finish.

Only 200 of these VOS versions were made, and the unique features of the Bloomfield Burst are precisely remade, including the uniquely faded body finish, control knobs, black tailpiece stud, trussrod cover and Grover tuners.

 

Bloomfield was apparently not very careful with his guitar, and the replaced parts must have all broke or fell off at some point, and because he didn’t care much, he would just put on some left-over parts, hence the unusual control knob configuration and early SG trussrod cover. It’s all part of the story.

 

This particular guitar we have at the shop plays great.

It has a pretty solid weight of 9.2 lbs, and combined with Burstbucker 1 pickup on the neck and Burstbucker 2 on the bridge, it’s got a good biting attack, and creamy midrange.

Very responsive to picking nuance, it’s got a very broad dynamic range and the more you dig in, the more it belts out.

 

Beside from being a very rare piece, this guitar plays great.
