【Staff Pick!】2011 Mike Lull FX (Sunburst)

本日ご紹介するのは
2011年製 Mike Lull FX (Sunburst)です。
ギブソン・ファイヤーバードといえばとても個性的なギターというイメージを持っている方も多いはず。
一目で分かるオフセットボディシェイプ、そして他のピックアップにはない独特の特性を持つミニハムバッカー。とてもユニークですよね。
どのギターにもあるように、ファイヤーバードにも弱点はあります。ヘッドストックに角度が付いているのと大きいので比較的折れやすく、またビンテージのようにバンジョーペグが付いているものはその大きさと重さでより折れやすくなります。スルーネック構造なので一度折れたらスルーネックじゃなくなってしまうのも痛いところです。
マイク・ルル氏はそんなファイヤーバードに自分なりのアレンジを加え、”FX”と名付けました。
フェンダーに見られるようなボルトオン・ネック、ヘッド角無しのノンリバースヘッドを採用し、”Lightweight, bad-ass and versatile (軽くて、イケてて、幅広く使える)”と形容していて、まさにその通りです。3.24kgしかなく、前述した仕様を除けば、基本的にはファイヤーバードのスペックを踏襲しており、ボディもネックもマホガニーを使用しています。
ルル氏は”幅広い”と言っていますが、見るからに個性派なファイヤーバードスタイルのギターに幅広い対応力があるというイメージはあまりないかもしれません。ところがどっこい、この軽さと出音は実用性の高さを感じざるを得ません。ぼくは個人的に唱え続けているのですが、ミニハムバッカーというピックアップは実はすごく優秀で扱いやすく、シャリンとした高音域とタイトな低音域のおかげで比較的機材を選びません。クリーントーンはシングルコイルのようにキラッと綺麗に鳴りつつ、でもそこはハムバッカーなので決してか細くはなく、かといってP-90のようなローミッドに目立った太さがある訳でもありません。また歪ませても一部のハムバッカーのようにローミッドから低音域にかけての帯域が膨らみすぎることもなく、ドライな質感で輪郭がしっかり残る感じが気持ちいいです。
ボルトオン・ネックとノンリバースヘッドも弾き心地と出音に少なからず影響を与えます。スルーネックであればサステインがすごく長いですが、こちらのFXの場合は音にもう少し隙間が得られ、ボディの振動もネックジョイント周りに比較的集中するため、ややフェンダーっぽさも感じます。アルペジオを弾いたときの各音の明瞭度がかなり変わると思います。
コントロールは1ボリューム1トーンとシンプルながら、頼れる相棒になりうる素晴らしい楽器です。

The Gibson Firebird is unique in many ways.
The first thing that pops into the eyes is the unusual offset body shape. Then those mini-humbuckers have that tone that’s unlike any other pickup.
Firebirds do have some weaknesses just like any other guitar. The headstock tends to break easily because of its size and angle, and the heavy banjo tuners make it even more vulnerable. Because of its neck-thru construction, if you break the neck, it’s no longer neck-thru and you would just have to live with it.
Mike Lull decided to step up and do a rendition of his own, calling it the “FX”.
He chose bolt-on neck joint and a non-reverse headstock without any head angle like you see on Fenders. “Lightweight, bad-ass and versatile” are the words he used to describe the FX, and it truly makes sense. The one we have weighs only 7.14 lbs, and apart from the features mentioned above, it’s pretty much a Firebird with mahogany body and mahogany neck.
I’m not sure if you would have an image of Firebirds being versatile. However, I think those mini-humbuckers are actually very versatile pickups. With the shimmery treble and tight low-end, they’re actually easy to get along and goes together nicely with various amps and pedals. The clean tone is sparkly, but since they’re still humbuckers, they aren’t thin like some single-coils, and certainly not midrange-y like P-90s. Throw in some dirt, and it doesn’t get muddy like some humbuckers. Nice and gritty without losing definition.
The bolt-on neck joint and non-reverse headstock definitely affects the play feel and tone. With the neck-thru construction, the sustain is ridiculously long where as with the FX, the body resonance would focus mainly around the neck joint, giving the guitar a slightly Fender-ish feel.
A highly dependable guitar in its own right.
