本日ご紹介するのは

2013年製 Fender Custom Shop Michael Landau ’68 Stratocaster Heavy Relic (Black)です。

 

マイケル・ランドウは上手すぎますよね。どんな楽器でもめちゃめちゃいい音を出せちゃうタイプの人だと思います。80年代からセッション・ギタリストとして引っ張りだこなランドウ氏はBBキング、マイルス・デイビス、レイ・チャールス、ジョニ・ミッチェル、ボズ・スキャッグス、ジェイムス・テイラー、ピンク・フロイドなど名だたるトップ・アーティストと共演を重ねてこられています。またこの共演歴を見ると、彼がどれほど守備範囲が広いかも一目瞭然だと思います。

そんなランドウ氏が選んで使用する楽器ですから、同様に広い対応力が求められるのは言わずもがな。彼が演奏している映像や写真などを見たことがある方であれば黒い’68ストラトキャスターを弾いている姿を見たことがあると思います。今日ご紹介するのはまさにそのモデルです。このレリックの感じから見ても一見使い込まれたビンテージのようなルックスですが、やはりそこはランドウ・モデル、確かなこだわりを持ったユニークな仕様が盛り込まれています。

まず触れておかないといけないのはその特殊なネックシェイプです。左右をあえて非対称なシェイプにすることにより（ランドウ氏本人にとっての）プレイアビリティを向上させていて、通常のカスタムショップ製の60年代後半モデルに採用されているCシェイプよりもわずかに厚みがあり、実際は握った瞬間に歪（いびつ）だと感じる訳でなく、ぼくはこの握り心地はすごく好きです。ネックの体積自体が増える分低音域がよりしっかりしていて、特に60年代後半スタイルのストラトであれば個人的に欲しいのはこういう音です。指板のRは7.25″でありながらナロージャンボサイズのフレットが打たれていて、現代の音楽で求められる演奏性とビンテージの味が共存しています。

この楽器の一番のミソはピックアップなのかなと思います。ホセフィーナ・カンポス女史によるハンドワウンドの”Fat 50’s”が搭載されていて、上から下までの帯域をバランスよく出力してくれて、倍音がギュッと凝縮されたような印象です。のっけから素晴らしい出音なのですが、クセがさほどなくある程度の出力がある分ペダル類の機材をあまり選ばないというのも強みです。これがマスタービルトですと言われてぼくは簡単に騙されてしまいそうなくらいです。

やはりランドウの名前が付くものに下手なものはありませんね。

2013 Fender Custom Shop Michael Landau ’68 Stratocaster Heavy Relic (Black)

 

Michael Landau is just too good. He is one of those guys that sound absurdly good on pretty much any instrument he plays. As an in-demand session guitarist since the 80’s, he is credited for his work with greats such as B.B. King, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Joni Mitchell, Boz Scaggs, James Taylor, Pink Floyd and a whole slew of others. Just by looking at all these names you can already tell how versatile this man is.

That being said, his go-to instruments have got to be just as versatile. If you’ve ever checked out Mr. Landau’s playing, I’m sure you’ve seen him play the black ’68 Strat, and that’s what we have today (surprise!). With all the relic work, it looks like a good broken-in Strat, but it’s got some unique specs worth mentioning that supports Landau’s musical versatility.

First and foremost, the neck has a unique asymmetrical profile that feels very nice in the hands. It is slightly thicker than typical Custom Shop late ’60s style Strats, creating a solid low-end that I would look for in a Strat based on this era. The narrow-jumbo frets makes things easier to play with longer sustain. The fretboard radius is vintage-style 7.25″, so there’s both modern playability and vintage vibe going on.

The one thing that stands out with this guitar is the pickups. They are Josefina Campos Handwound Fat-50’s, and these have a very balanced tone from high to low frequencies with focused harmonic character. They sound really good right from the start, but not only that, the good amount of output makes it gear-friendly, and would get along with various pedals that may come in need for the gig or session. I would easily be fooled if they told me the guitar is a Masterbuilt. That’s how good it sounds. All positions sound musical and usable of course, and I really enjoyed playing it.

This guitar just goes to show you can’t go wrong with anything that’s got Mr. Landau’s name. It’s a workhorse!
