本日ご紹介するのは
2013 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1959 Les Paul Lightly Aged (Lemon Burst)。

 

まずはこのトップの杢目。

左右対称でもなければ均整が取れてる訳でもないけど、このランダムなメラメラと燃えるような杢目はカッコいいのではないでしょうか！

 

3.85kgとレスポールにしては軽量な分、生鳴りの中域がふくよかです。

 

2013年製でギブソンが大々的な仕様変更（カスタムバッカー・ピックアップ、チューブレストラスロッド、ロングテールピーススタッド、ライトウェイト・アルミ・テールピース、ニカワ接着等）をした後のモデル。

 

個人的には2012年までと2013年以降の仕様で一番大きな違いを感じるのはピックアップです。

カスタムバッカーは高音域が立っていて低音域がタイト。出力もやや抑えめなので今日ご紹介しているような軽めで中域が豊かな個体との相性がいい印象があります（バーストバッカーは低中域がパワフルで、これはこれでいい）。

 

この生鳴りのおかげでサステインの倍音が豊か。レスポールファンは”ブルーム”と呼んだりしますが、ドンピシャのビンテージ・バーストのそれとはやはり少し違うけど、それでもこれはこれでとてもいい音です。

My pick for today is…

2013 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1959 Les Paul Lightly Aged (Lemon Burst).

 

First of all, I think this top is worth mentioning.

It doesn’t have a particular “pattern”  nor is it symmetrical, but the whole thing looks like a burning flame.

Pretty friggin’ cool.

 

Pretty light for a Les Paul weighing 8.48 lbs, it’s got a good open mid-range found in lighter Les Pauls.

 

This one is from 2013 meaning this one was made after all the spec changes were made (Custombuckers, tubeless trussrod, longer tailpiece studs, lightweight aluminum tailpiece, the use of hide glue for neck setting, etc.)

 

In my humble opinion, the largest difference between a pre-2013 and an after-2013 Les Paul is the character of the pickups.

Custombuckers have a crisper treble and a tighter low-end, and they go nicely together with lighter Les Pauls like the one I’m writing today. (The Burstbuckers found in earlier Custom Shop Les Pauls have a little more power in the low mid-range frequencies and you can’t really say which is better. It’s a matter of preference.)

 

Because of the mid-range-rich body resonance, there’s a nice harmonic detail in the sustain, which Les Paul fans often refer to as “bloom”. Not exactly the same kind of “bloom” like those real-deal vintage ‘Bursts, but a very nice tone in its own right.
