本日ご紹介するのは

2014年製 Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Heavily Aged Hand Selected (Bourbon Burst)です。

 

ここ最近はバーボンバーストのレスポールが数本入荷しており、なかなかいい気分です。

ボディのアウトラインの濃い色味のチェリーカラーが上品な印象を与え、メイプルトップの杢目の良さがより際立ちます。これカッコいいでしょう…

この個体のエイジング加工は他のヘビリーエイジド仕様のものと一味違う感じがします。ボディエッジやバック、ネックグリップの塗装がかなり大胆に剥がされ、何年もの間弾かれ続けてきたかのような味を感じます。押し入れに60年間しまっていてもこんな風貌にはならないですよね。とにかく弾き倒さないと。

実際にはまだ4歳程度ですが、既に地球を何周かしているかのようです。

 

こんなルックスともなると音にもある程度のコシが欲しくなるのはぼくだけでしょうか。

軽いレスポールのような空気感と中域の膨らみはもちろん魅力的だし好きですが、この見た目だとどこか物足りなさを感じてしまいそうなんです。

ぼくがこの個体を店内で弾き始めたとき、他のスタッフが珍しく振り返り、「それなんかいい音しているね」と。日常的にレスポールの音を聞いている人間がなかなかそういう風に振り返ることはありません。

 

3.98kgと絶妙な重さで、これが音に密度の高い倍音と線の太さを与えます。いい塩梅の押し出し感があるので、ついついアンプの音量を大きめにしたくなるし、大きくするとめちゃめちゃ気持ち良いです。

 

もう少し軽い個体だと輪郭が少し”ユルく”なり、これはこれで温かみを感じれる音なのでいいのですが、この個体はフロントでも低音域がガシっとまとまっていてバイト感が強い。本当に絶妙な音です。

2014 Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Heavily Aged (Bourbon Burst)

 

We’ve had a few Bourbon Burst Les Pauls come in recently, and I’m pretty happy with that.

The dark shade of cherry color on the outline really gives the guitar a classy look, making the figure of the maple top stand out. It’s gorgeous isn’t it?

The aging on this one is not quite like other Heavily Aged Les Pauls. It really looks like a well-loved and played guitar having a lot of mileage on its wheels. The finish is completely worn off around the body edge as well as back of the body and neck, revealing the bare wood. You can’t just have it lying around under the bed for 60 years to get this kind of wear. You have to play, and play the heck out of it.

This guitar is only 4 years old, but boy it’s got that road warrior look.

 

Given this look, I wouldn’t really want it to sound too airy, too midrange-y like you find in lightweight Les Pauls. Don’t get me wrong, I love that tone that only light Les Pauls have, but I would prefer a little more meat in a guitar with this look.

When I started playing this, the other guys in the shop actually looked around to see what I was playing. They were like “Wait, that thing is sounding really good.” We’re all used to hearing Les Pauls, and we don’t ever turn around like that.

Weighing 8.77 lbs, t’s got just enough weight to give the tone a little harmonic density and boldness that would cut through. This thing likes it loud, and when you crank the amp, the guitar hits it out of the ballpark.

Lighter Les Pauls would have a slightly “looser” definition which is nothing bad. You would probably hear warmness in a tone like this, but with a heavier (it’s not heavy, just a tad heavier) Les Paul like this one, the low-end is focused and the attack really bites even in the neck position.

This one’s surely a slugger that can also run and steal bases.
