本日ご紹介するのは

2014 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1959 Les Paul Murphy Aged Hand Select (Vintage Lemon Fade)

です。

 

一目見ただけで吸い込まれました。

 

このトップの細かめな杢目とフレックが交差して現れる表情がすごく素敵。

それからレモンバーストではなくレモンフェイドになっている点もまた◎。

バーストのアウトラインに元々あったであろうチェリーカラーが経年変化でフェイドした感じがほのかに見えてエイジングがよりリアルに見えます。

 

ビンテージギターがお好きであればお分かり頂けると思いますが、そのギターが現在までにどのような物語を紡いできたのかというところにロマンを感じてしまいます。

もちろんこのレスポールはビンテージではないものの、どことなくそういう物語を感じれるところにグッときてしまいます。

 

ネックシェイプは程よく両端の丸みが削ぎ落されていて手の馴染みがいい。

このような形状だと厚みがやや少なく感じられますが、それでもしっかりとした質量は保たれているのでレスポールのおいしい中低域が損なわれることはありません。

 

全体の重量は3.79kgとレスポールにしては軽量で、アンプに繋がずに弾くとボディの中でしっかりと音が鳴っているのがよく分かります。もちろんウェイトリリーフが施されている訳でもチェンバード構造になっている訳でもありません。

環境にもよりますが、こういうギターの場合だとバンドやオケの中に入ったときにヌケてくるのは高音域のアタックよりも中〜低音域であることが多いです。

ボディの生鳴りが持つ空気感がレスポール好きの間で”ブルーム”と呼ばれる膨らんでいくような豊かで温かい中域の倍音となって出音に現れます。

 

ピックアップの高さを調整すればアタックのバイト感をもう少し出してあげる事も出来るし、逆にクリーンでジャジーなニュアンスに寄せることも可能です。

 

この手の音はちゃんと作られたレスポールにのみ与えられるもの。

この高貴な音こそがレスポールをエレキギターの王様たらしめるものなのではないでしょうか。

My pick for today is…

2014 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1959 Les Paul Murphy Aged Hand Select (Vintage Lemon Fade).

 

The moment I set my eyes on this guitar, I fell in love.

 

The top is just gorgeous with the flecks and grain of the maple top criss-crossing over each other to form a complex pattern.

I also love how the finish is not a Lemon Burst but a Lemon Fade.

You can see how the cherry outline of the burst “used to be there but faded over time” which makes the aging look all the more realistic.

If you’re a fan of vintage guitars, I know you’re fascinated by the stories each guitar has to tell, and though this one isn’t a vintage and is merely 3 years old, you can kind of feel that story, which I think is what this whole “aging” thing is all about.

 

The neck has a nice not-too-round profile with the shoulders slightly rolled off.

You feel less thickness with this kind of shape, but still has enough chunk to create the rich low-midrange of the Les Paul tone we all love.

 

This guitar falls on the lighter side weighing just over 8.3 lbs.

You already feel the resonance inside the body playing it unplugged. Obviously this guitar does not have a chambered body.

When you have a guitar like this, the frequency range that actually cuts through the band comes into the low-midrange to midrange frequencies and not the treble frequency range.

The airiness of the body resonance gives the output a rich harmonics in the midrange, where in the Les Paul world, afficionados call the “bloom”.

 

You can always raise the pickup height if you’re looking for a little more bite, and you can lower the height if you like to play clean with a jazzy feel or smooth overdrive break-up.

 

This is the kind of tone that is found only in well-made Les Pauls.

The elegance of this guitar is an example of why Les Paul became the king of electric guitars.
