本日ご紹介するのは

2015年製 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Select 1959 Les Paul Aged Hand Selected (Green Lemon)です。

 

使い込まれたギターというのはやはりいいもので、だからこそビンテージギターにマジックを感じてしまうんですよね。しかしながらビンテージともなると値段もなかなかカッコよく、レスポールなんか買おうと思ったらそれはもうすごい額です。

 

もしビンテージバーストのようなルックスと手触りがバーストよりかは手の届く価格で手に入るのであれば逃す手はない。近年のトゥルーヒストリックやヒストリックセレクトはカスタムショップの最上位クラスというだけあって、素晴らしいクオリティだと思います。

今までもこのラインのものは数多くご紹介してきましたし、どれも皆安定して極上でしたし、今日の一本もまた然り。

 

このグリーンレモンの色味なんていいじゃないですか、これ。

元々チェリーサンバーストだったものが、60年という歳月を経てチェリーの赤味が薄いチェリーだったり、茶色、緑、そして完全に消えきった黄色 (レモン)といった具合に保管されていた環境によって褪色していき、今となってはそのフェイド加減も歴史の一部ということになります。そしてそこにワクワクしてしまうんですよね。

近年のギブソン・カスタム・ショップのレスポールにはたくさんのカラー名が付いているのにお気づきの方も多いと思いますが、これはそのフェイド具合や色味を再現しようとしているからなんですね。

 

さて、肝心の音。

この一本は3.84kgとトゥルーヒストリックに比較的多く見られる軽い個体で、その分温かい中域の膨らみがあります。この質の中域はピックアップを替えて得られるものではありません。これは木部が持つ音であり、これを電装系で変えるのは難しいです。

ぼくのお気に入りポイントは高音域の鳴り方です。

強いタッチでも軽いタッチでもしっかりと反応する広いダイナミックレンジを持ち、アンプ側でトレブルを極端に出さない限りはあまり耳に痛いプレゼンス帯域が出ない分、聴覚上のピークが高中域にシフトし、この感じがまさにバーストライクな出音です。単音で弾いてもクリーミーで豊かな倍音量があり、アンプのボリュームを上げていけばあのサステイン中の倍音が膨らんでいきます。

 

このクオリティーのレスポールであれば間違いはないでしょう。

2015 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Select 1959 Les Paul Aged Hand Selected (Green Lemon)

 

We all love broken-in guitars. That’s one of the reasons why vintage guitars have that magic. However, vintage guitars are pretty expensive nowadays, and an old Les Paul would blow the roof off.

 

If we could get a similar looking and feeling guitar in a fraction of the price of a ‘Burst, who wouldn’t take it? That’s what these True Historic and Historic Select line are shooting for, and I think they’re fabulous guitars.

I’ve shared a handful of True Historic and Historic Select Les Pauls, and believe me, they are very nice guitars, and the one I’ll be sharing with you all today doesn’t fall short at all.

 

The Green Lemon finish definitely has a thing or two to say.

In the real ‘Burst world, many of them start out as Cherry Sunburst, but over the course of the past 60 years, that Cherry outline would fade away, becoming a lighter cherry, brown, green, or a complete yellow (lemon) depending on the environment in which the guitar was kept. That’s history, and that’s what we all fantasize about.

You might have noticed Gibson Custom Shop offers Les Pauls in various finish names, this is because they are trying to emulate that fade.

 

So how does it sound?

Like many True Historics, this Les Paul is pretty light weighing just under 8.5 lbs, meaning it’s got a nice warm midrange bloom that only lightweight Les Pauls have. You can’t really get this kind of tone just by swapping the pickups. This is how the wood sounds, and if the would doesn’t have it, there isn’t really any way of altering that.

What I love about this particular guitar is how the treble end sounds.

You can dig in hard or pluck it soft and the guitar rings either way. You’re not going to get a very harsh piercing treble with this one unless you dime the treble on your amp, but because of this the frequency peak shifts to upper midrange, similar to how some ‘Bursts sound. The single notes have a creamy overtone and complex harmonic detail in the sustain. Crank the volume on the amp and you’ll hear that bloooom.

 

You can’t go wrong with a Les Paul of this quality.
