本日ご紹介するのは

2015年製 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Select 1959 Les Paul Murphy Aged (Bourbon Burst)です。

 

バーボンバーストフィニッシュ、トムマーフィーエイジドときてしかも超軽量。さらにはこの個性溢れるトップの杢目ときたらもう文句なしでしょう。

 

何よりも驚いたのは3.66kgという重量にも関わらず音がデカいです。

ピックアップは標準搭載のカスタムバッカーなのですが、出力が通常より少々強い感じがします。元々カスタムバッカーはバイト感が強く低音域がタイトなのが特徴。これがこの軽量なボディと抜群の相性なんです。ボディ自体にはふくよかな生鳴りと空気感がありまるでセミアコのよう。もちろんウェイトリリーフは施されていません。ここまで軽いと少々輪郭がぼやけたり押し出しが弱いものも中にはありますが、カスタムバッカーの特性が見事に補ってくれている印象です。

少々出力が強いと聞くと出音が明るすぎたりするのかもと思ってしまう方もいるかもしれませんが、ボディが軽いだけにそういったことはありません。出音の帯域のピークが高音域から高中域にシフトし、またカスタムバッカーはギブソンのピックアップの中ではクセが少なく、木部が持つ音をストレートに出力してくれます。

リアポジションの出音は極上で密度の高い芳醇な倍音には思わずニヤけてしまいます。フロントはアタックにしっかりとしたエッジがあり、低音域が嫌に膨らんでモコモコしたりもしません。甘く温かくも輪郭ははっきりしています。トータルで見ても完成度の高い楽器です。

2015 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Select 1959 Les Paul Murphy Aged (Bourbon Burst)

 

What is not good about a Bourbon Burst Les Paul aged by Tom Murphy that’s light as feather? I’m sure I’m not complaining, especially with this killing top.

 

What surprised me was its volume. This thing is loud.

It’s got the original Custombuckers, probably wound a bit hot. Custombuckers tend to have a biting character in the upper frequency and tight low-end. This really matches the light body. Weighing only 8.06 lbs, the body has great resonance and airiness, almost like a semi-hollow body guitar. A Les Paul this light sometimes lack punchiness and clarity. Load it with Custombuckers and everything becomes balanced out.

You might imagine a bright tone when I say “slightly hot pickups”, but not at all. This is another result of the lightweight body. The frequency peak tends to shift to upper midrange, and because Custombuckers are fairly transparent compared to other pickups from Gibson, it doesn’t take away the sound of the wood. With a midrange-y resonance like this particular Les Paul, you’re going to get that midrange, and you’re going to love it.

The bridge position sounds fantastic with dense, bloomy harmonics. The neck position has a biting attack and none of that annoying muddiness. Warm and sweet, yet with clear definition. I think we have the perfect medium right here.

A singing Les Paul like this one is the one to have in your arsenal.
