本日ご紹介するのは

2015 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Select 1959 Les Paul Vintage Gloss (Green Lemon)です。

 

今日はカッコいいグリーンレモンのレスポール。

ぼくはこのフェイド具合、といってももちろんこの個体は元々この形で作られていて実際に褪色している訳でありませんが、この色味の感じがすごく好みなんですよね。

ご存知の方も多いとは思いますが、50年代のレスポールで元々グリーンレモンカラーのものは存在しません。多くの場合、製造から60年も経てばフィニッシュの褪色は避けられず、特にバーストのチェリーカラーの赤味が抜けていって緑になっていきます。ぼくのようにヴィンテージのバーストほど長く生きていない人間からすると、今でこそ年月とともに味わい深い趣を醸し出すバーストがまだ若かった頃の姿など古い写真などの資料くらいでしか知る術はありません。だからぼくにとってのバーストの魅力はあの使い込まれてきたからこその貫禄に向けられている部分が少なからずあります。

この個体は高音弦側のカッタウェイに最も緑が濃く残っていて、お尻の部分とトグルスイッチ周りにも少し残っています。こういった部位は比較的触れない部分だったりするので、ビンテージのバーストでもこういった傾向は見られます。中にはトグルスイッチ周りが顕著に濃く残っているものもあり、良い例がマーク・ノップラーの58年製レスポールやジョー・ボナマッサの”スキナー・バースト”。このブログで度々唱えていますが、こういったフィニッシュの特徴もその楽器の歴史の一部であり、ワクワクする部分ですよね。グリーンレモンというフィニッシュにはそういう意味合いも込められており、実際に古いわけではなくても、そういった歴史へのリスペクトを感じます。そして何より、このフェイドした姿が素直にカッコいいと感じちゃう訳です。

トゥルーヒストリックのクオリティも随所に見られます。ある程度の軽さがないと出てこない膨らみのある、よく「甘い」と表現される中域、そしてある程度の重さがないと出てこない押し出しのバランスがちょうど良いです。 “カスタムバッカー”ピックアップの特徴であるあまりボヤけないタイトな低音域のおかげでフロントでもこもらず、相対的にバイトの強いアタックが生み出されます。ぼくは毎度トゥルーヒストリックグレードのギターの安定したクオリティーの高さに驚かされます。どれもそれぞれの良さがあり、あとはもう好みの問題です。

とにかくルックスの良いギターを一本持っておくことに何の罪もないでしょう。

2015 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Select 1959 Les Paul Vintage Gloss (Green Lemon)

 

Here’s a Green Lemon beauty I want to share with you today.

I personally love the fade on this one, though of course it was made this way and not actually faded.

Most of the times, after 60 years of use, the colors on a vintage Les Paul would normally fade away, taking away the cherry burst outline. The remnants of what used to be cherry would often turn green, and the way the green shows would be different with each guitar. For a guy like me who hasn’t lived as long as those vintage Bursts, there isn’t really any way of knowing how those guitars looked like when it was new except for maybe seeing old photos of them. I take the faded finish as one of the mystics of Bursts, and I’m sure many of you would feel the same way.

The green on this particular guitar mainly shows around the treble string side cutaway and a little bit around the bout and around the toggle switch as well. This happens with vintage Bursts as well since you don’t touch these parts as much. Some have less fade around the toggle switch, and a good example might be the Mark Knopfler 1958 Les Paul or the “Skinner Burst”. I think I’ve said this numerous times on this blog, but it’s all part of the history, and that’s what fascinates us.

You can expect all the True Historic goodness in this one. Very nice weight that would give you a nice balance of both sweet midrange and push. Custombucker pickups prevent it from sounding muddy with its tight low-end character even in the neck position, giving it a nice biting attack. I’m always amazed by the consistency of these True Historic/Historic Select guitars. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one guitar that just sounds totally dead. They’re all great, and it’s only a matter of preference.

Having a good-looking Les Paul won’t hurt no one.
