本日ご紹介するのは

2015年製 RS Guitarworks STee BLACKGUARD (White Blonde)です。

 

R.S.ギターワークスの面白いやつ入りました。

R.S.のロイさんとスコットさんは長年に渡りビンテージギターのリペアや修復をしつつその細部まで研究し尽くし、そこから導き出したあらゆる答えが製作された楽器に投影されてます。

またアセンブリーなども自分たちで製作しており、決して見た目一辺倒ではなく、出音さえもビンテージのそれを追求するという徹底ぶりです。

 

それからR.S.といえばユニークな”ハイブリッドデザイン”のモデルの数々。

ファイヤーバードとテレキャスターを掛け合わせた”TeeByrd”やフライングVとテレキャスターを掛け合わせた”TeeVee”など。

しかもどれもただ「やってみました」なのではなく、ちゃんとした意図を感じるものばかりなんです。

 

そんなこんなでお見せしたいのがこの”STee”。

見ての通りSGとテレキャスターを掛け合わせたモデルです。

 

SGシェイプのボディはテレ同様に軽量なアッシュ材を用い、ボディの厚み自体もテレと同じになってます。SGとして見ると通常より分厚いですね。またネックもテレ同様にメイプルを使い、ノーキャスターまではいかないにしろ厚みのある形状のものがボルトオンされてます。

 

ピックアップの構成もテレ仕様で、リンディーフレーリンのカスタムセットがセレクトされてます。

 

ここまで聞くと「要するにSGの形をしたテレなんでしょ」と思うかもしれませんしぼくも正直最初はそう思ってましたが、あなどることなかれ。

 

確かに、リンディーのピックアップはテレ設計ですし出力もさほど強くないのでテレらしさが多分にあります。しかし、出音自体は普通のテレよりも遥かに高中域の膨らみがあります。

アッシュボディですが、どこかマホガニーっぽさを感じる帯域特性があり、いかにもテレらしい乾いたトゥワング感こそあまりありませんが、これはこれで非常に面白みがあって使える音です。

両ピックアップの音量バランスもよく、実用性の高さを感じる楽器です。

 

SGボディの圧倒的な強みであるハイポジションの弾きやすさはもちろん健在。

 

普段からSGを愛用している身としては、テレとSGという全く違う性質の楽器の強みを上手く抽出しつつ、弱点ともなりうる部分を排除したこの出来には感服しました。R.S.ギターワークスはただ”面白そう”というだけのハイブリッドなのではなく、インスピレーションを具現化させる上でのちゃんとした狙いを感じます。

My pick for today is…

2015 RS Guitarworks STee BLACKGUARD (White Blonde)

 

Here’s another unique creation from the folks at R.S. Guitarworks.

These guys have been researching vintage guitars for years and are known for their fine aging technique and superb tone quality.

Not only do they look vintage, they make their own electronic components such as pots and tone capacitors.

You can tell how much work they put into their craft.

 

One other thing they are known for is their idea for “hybrid” guitars.

TeeByrds are a Firebird and Tele made into one; TeeVee are a Flying V and Tele made into one.

Believe me, they all make sense.

 

And the one I’m going to share with you today is, obviously, an SG and Tele put together.

 

The SG-shaped body is made from lightweight ash (like a Tele), and has the thickness of a Tele. The thick, round C-shaped neck is made from maple (again, like a Tele) and bolted on to the body.

The pickup configuration is also that of a Tele, and they selected Lindy Fralin Custom Set for the job.

 

You might think it’s basically a Tele with an SG-style body, but that’s not quite the case.

 

The Lindy Fralin pickups definitely have the low output, good-ol’ Tele flavor, but the sound actually has far more upper midrange than a normal Tele would.

Though the body is ash, I kind of feel a mahogany-ness to this sonic character. Not exactly the dry Tele twang, but a very enjoyable tone in its own right.

Both pickups are nicely balanced and musical. And fun.

 

The upper register is easily reachable, which is one of the trademarks of SG bodies.

 

Being a full time SG player, I was impressed by how this guitar takes the pros of two distinctly different guitars while eliminating the cons that might have interfered with the other. As always, R.S. Guitarworks doesn’t just take an idea and throw it out on the street. There’s practicality and proper reasoning behind it all, while still maintaining the inspiration.
