【Staff Pick!】2016 Gibson Custom Shop Mike McCready 1959 Les Paul Signed Aged (McCready Burst)

さて、2018年の1本目はもうこれしかないというとっておきの一本。

2016年製 Gibson Custom Shop Mike McCready 1959 Les Paul Signed/Aged (McCready Burst)。

パールジャムのギタリスト、マイク・マクレディー氏が今でも愛用している1959年製レスポールスタンダードを細部にわたり再現したこちらのモデル、もはや圧倒的です。

サインド/エイジドモデルは50本のみ製造され、またトゥルーヒストリックスペックで製作されているのもこのサインド/エイジドモデルのみ。

ぼく自身今までビンテージを含めそこそこの数のレスポールを弾きましたが、カスタムショップ製エイジドモデルの中でこれほどビンテージライクなルックスをしたレスポールはあまりお目にかかったことがありません。

塗装のフェイド具合や弾き傷などが60年近くに渡り弾かれ続けてきた (そう、マクレディー氏のバーストはベッドの下で眠っていたようなギターではないのです)その歴史を物語っていて、その傷一つ一つが精巧にリメイクされてます。決してわざとらしくないのもいい。

ずっと眺めていても良かったのですが、まあそこは取りあえず弾いてみようということでアンプに繋げてみました。

先程とっておきと申し上げましたが、とっておきはここからでした。

ものすごい空気感がありつつ、どこか繊維質とでもいいましょうか、いかにもフェンダーの50年代のツイード系のアンプが合いそうな独特のオーバートーンがあります。

3.78kgと軽量なのですが、似たようなウェイトレンジの他の個体と比べても一線を画すものがあります。

フロントで弾くとドーンと響いていく低音が気持ちよく、ボディの鳴りの良さが際立っています。

モコモコするんじゃないの？なんて思う方もいらっしゃると思いますが、元々低音域がタイトなカスタムバッカーピックアップのお陰で輪郭はくっきりしています。ただひたすらレンジが広い。

6弦を弾いたら驚いちゃいますよ。

リアで弾いても、稚拙な表現ではありますが、

「本当にいいレスポール弾いてるな」って率直に思います。

軽い分トレブルが立ちすぎず、けれどもエッジの鋭いバイトがあるのでヌケはいい。

相対的に中域の膨らみと倍音量が非常に豊かです。

2018年一発目にこんなレスポールをご紹介できてぼくは自己満足に浸っております。

2016 Gibson Custom Shop Mike McCready 1959 Les Paul Signed/Aged (McCready Burst)

Capturing even the smallest detail of the ’59 Les Paul Standard owned by the Pearl Jam guitarist, the Mike McCready Les Paul could be the holy grail of non-vintage Pauls.

Only 50 of these were made, and only this Signed/Aged model was built with True Historic specs.

I’ve seen and played a good number of Les Pauls, but out of all the Custom Shop Aged models, this one is one of the most ‘Burst-like in terms of looks and tone.

The fade of the finish, all the scars and bruises made from almost 60 years of constantly being played (yes, the McCready Burst wasn’t just left under the bed forever); all these tell the story of this instrument.

I could have just gone on gazing at this thing, but then I though hey, why not plug it in for a little taste?

That was the end.

I said this guitar is something else. So it is.

There is this airiness and wooliness in the tone that’s simply captivating.

A 50’s Fender tweed amp would make a great companion.

It’s pretty light weighing just under 8.3 lbs, but there is something that makes it stand apart from other Les Pauls in similar weight range.

The neck pickup has this massive low-end that obviously comes from the body resonance. This thing rings.

You might imagine that awful muddiness, but thanks to the Custombucker pickup, the low end is actually pretty clear, but the harmonic range is huge.

Hit that low E-string and your jaw will hit the floor.

The bridge pickup really has a Burst-like character.

It contains tons of midrange juice that flourishes, and it screams.

Thanks to the light weight, the tone is never too harsh but still has enough sharpness to cut through in the mix.
