【Staff Pick!】2017 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt ’62 Custom Telecaster Relic by Paul Waller (Charcoal Frost Metallic/SB)

これまたマルチレイヤーの傑作の入荷です。今回はマスタービルダー、ポール・ウォーラー氏製作。
フェンダーの楽器ならチャコールフロストメタリックがカスタムカラーの中で一番好きな私ですが、今回は3トーンサンバーストの上からいってます。ボディバックのちょうどベルトバックルが当たる箇所から下のサンバーストが見えていますね。元々ボディバインディング付きのカスタム・テレが好きな上にメタリック系のカスタムカラー仕上げのカスタム・テレならもっと好きなぼくにとってこの楽器はまさに好き尽くめです。
ネックの塗装が剥がされていて手触りがよく、またシェイプもやや厚く丸みを帯びています。さすがにノーキャスターほどではありませんが、多くのカスタムショップ製60’sテレよりは確かに肉厚です。この程よいシェイプがぼくの手にはちょうど良く、また何よりも出音のローミッドが豊かなのが他のテレとは一味違う部分です。リアポジションでさえ、テレらしいジャキジャキ感がありつつも線の太い音が出ています。
このローミッドがピックアップではなく木部が鳴らしているので、フロントでも音はボヤけず、また弱々しくもありません。特に6弦を弾いたときなんかは低音域がドーンと出てくれます。またフロントとリアの音量のバランスもよく、サウンド面、実用面においてもとても優れた個体であるといえるのではないでしょうか。
フロントとリアをミックスしてもこのローミッドは健在で、テレのセンター特有の中域のクセがありつつも温かい倍音が漂います。ぼくはこのポジションが一番のお気に入りです。リードであれリズムであれこのポジションは気持ちいいです。
こういう見た目よし、音よしのカスタム・テレはあんまり長居しないんでしょうね、きっと。

My pick for today is…
Yet another multi-layer masterpiece, this time from Masterbuilder Paul Waller. We won’t be able to ship this one overseas due to Washington Treaty regulations, but it was just too good to pass up for this blog.
Charcoal Frost Metallic is one of my favorite custom colors on a Fender instrument, and they did it over the original 3-Tone Sunburst. You can see the Sunburst on the back where the belt buckle took away the top finish (well that’s how Paul did the relic work). I’ve always loved Custom Teles with the body binding, and I love them even more when they’re finished in custom metallic finishes.
What more can you get?
The neck feels smooth with the lacquer sanded off, and the profile is somewhat thick and round. Not as much as those Nocasters, but just a tad chunkier than typical Custom Shop 60’s Teles. With this profile the neck fit snug in my hand, and moreover created a powerful low-midrange. Even the bridge position has a gritty fatness along with snappy treble.
Because the low-midrange is coming from the wood and not the pickups, the neck position isn’t muddy or weak like some Teles. The low-end is big especially when you hit that low-E string. The volume between the bridge and neck pickups is balanced, meaning you have solid, usable and musical neck position to go along with your bridge tone.
Mix these two big sounding pickups and you still don’t lose that low-end. This is my favorite position. There’s that nasally yet chimey upper-midrange and a warm low-midrange all in this single position. Play lead or rhythm, this position seriously feels good.
I doubt a great looking, great sounding Custom Tele like this one will be hanging around for so long.
